Definition

An IUGS Heritage Stone is a natural stone that has been used in significant architecture and monuments globally recognized as integral aspects of human culture.

Standards and basic requirements

IUGS Heritage Stones represent the best examples worldwide of the connection between geological knowledge and its implementation in significant architecture and monuments.

The international significance of an IUGS Heritage Stone must be clearly justified by one or more of the following criteria:

  •  International distribution: The stone has been widely exported and used in built environment (buildings and monuments) in several countries.
  • Use in emblematic buildings/sites: Historical use of the stone in singular and iconic buildings internationally recognized as a relevant contribution to human culture. The use of the stone must have played a key role in the valuable features of the building.
  • Traditional architecture: Historical use of the stone as a key factor in the development of a significant culture or society and its traditional architecture, which is internationally recognized for its distinctive features.
  • Unique character of the stone: a natural stone that is internationally appreciated for its unique petrography and / or appearance.

An IUGS Heritage Stone must contain precise information about its petrographic and petrophysical characteristics; quarrying and use has to be well documented.

Selection and ratification process

Proposals for an IUGS Heritage Stone can be submitted to the HSS Secretary General throughout the year. Please use the proposal template.

In general, anyone can submit an application. However, it is recommended to have a geologist involved as well as specialists who work with this stone (e.g. in the geopark, in use, in monument preservation, etc.).

The proposals will be sent for review twice a year, usually in spring and autumn.

The detailed ratification process is described in the document „Scope – objectives – workflow“.

Once the proposal is ratified by IUGS the information will be posted on the website and a certificate will be handed over.
