Porto historical centre with emblematic granite items
The Porto granite exploitation was marked by intense activity since the beginning of the development of the city, demonstrated by the primitive defensive structures of two distinct ages (the oldest probably of Roman age and the latter built in the 14th century), in the cathedral that marks the earliest medieval constructions, in the flourishing Baroque buildings illustrated by the magnificent Clerigos Tower erected in the 18th century and in uncountable monuments, churches and public and private urban buildings that mark the character of this granitic city until the first half of the 20th century but that are harmoniously side by side with modern architecture. The impact of the Porto granite can also be appreciated in the built heritage in the outskirts of the city and in international destinations that include Brazil, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, United States and Asian countries.
