Aesthetics

Light grey to white colour, with a natural variability of yellowish colour that is considered a natural colour in the quarries where the granite was affected by late- to post-magmatic alteration processes. A local structural orientation confirms the shearing that characterizes the syn-collisional installation of the granite magma during the third Variscan tectonic phase.

Geological settings

Ante-Mesozoic granite group, syn-last Variscan tectonic phase, installed in the Central Iberian Zone close to the limit with the Ossa Morena Zone

The Porto granite exploitation was marked by intense activity since the beginning of the development of the city, demonstrated by the primitive defensive structures of two distinct ages (the oldest probably of Roman age and the latter built in the 14th century), in the cathedral that marks the earliest medieval constructions, in the flourishing Baroque buildings illustrated by the magnificent Clerigos Tower erected in the 18th century and in uncountable monuments, churches and public and private urban buildings that mark the character of this granitic city until the first half of the 20th century but that are harmoniously side by side with modern architecture. The impact of the Porto granite can also be appreciated in the built heritage in the outskirts of the city and in international destinations that include Brazil, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, United States and Asian countries.
